(Excuse the poor writing of this journal, I'm no journalist so it might be all over the place)
I hope everyone is having a safe and warm holiday.
I can only speak from my perspective because I've been cut off from all forms of communication for several days and getting things ready for Christmas dinner party and whatnot. I haven't talked to many friends, neighbors or heard from the people of my city to know how everyone else handled the storm but I'm pretty sure it wasn't fun times.
And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm talking about this huge ice storm that plunged my city and surrounding areas into literally an icy horrorland, like, I have no idea how far it went because I haven't had internet and tv for a few days to check the news but my guess is it at least affected everyone living around the Great Lakes in Canada, America and maybe to the north (I'm looking at maps on google and it looks like all of midwestern North America has been affected) but it the 21 years I've been alive I've never personally witnessed weather conditions like this. It was kind of cool but damn nature, you scary.
It was estimated 90,000+(?) people went without power and many are still sitting in the dark this holiday season. Even though it's been a few days it hasn't disappeared yet, a lot of the ice remains.
I was lucky to live within a small pocket of my neighborhood that was able to hold onto it's power, just no cable. Friends from my moms work came to my house for coffee and hot showers. If my neighbors see me out running errands on foot they'd give me a lift home (was really grateful for that). Lucky major business' were up and running in a matter of a day and it had people without power actually excited to go to work just to get out of the cold.
It was extra scary to know that my father had to drive in these conditions because it's part of his job, with icy roads and blacked out street lights. Trees were falling everywhere. A massive tree branch almost fell on me on my way to work (just to find out we had no power at work as well) and I took my dogs out for a walk and witnessed a tree fall from across the street. The sound of cracking, busting trees was tragically awesome to hear, and terrifying. They haven't been for a "proper" walk, that usually goes between 30 mins to 2 hours, in days because of the threat of falling trees and frostbitten paws. A tree fell on my neighbor's car, another fell on my neighbor's car and garage just up the street. I have no idea if anyone was harmed by these falling trees. An entire tree fell over from my neighbors backyard into mine. It took out two smaller trees on it's way down but other then that no major damage has been done other then maybe a dented fence.
R.I.P Japanese Maple Tree that was crushed larger tree.
The sidewalks an streets were covered, just covered with ice. Everything. It wasn't just a light coating, it was like an inches or two in some places, cars, roads and trees that collapsed from not being able to hold the added weight. Pictures are to come of the mess and ice. I will post them to my tumblr and leave a link to them.
